Israeli Arabs shout slogans during a protest in the northern town of Umm el-Fahem February 10, 2009. Israeli police intervened on Tuesday to prevent a clash between a hardline Jewish legislator and Israeli Arabs, averting violence that could have marred a so far peaceful parliamentary election. A police spokesman said officers whisked legislator Arieh Eldad of the nationalist Ichud Leumi (National Union) party out of the Arab Israeli town of Umm el-Fahem after "tensions rose" between him and residents, who hurled stones at police.
