A worker from the Secretary of State for Public Health and Welfare (SESPAS) collects mosquitoes with the ability to transmit dengue, into a glass tube inside a laboratory in Santo Domingo November 27, 2009. At least 40 residents died of dengue in the Dominican Republic in 2009, according to the local media. Dengue, an acute viral disease transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is characterized by high fever, severe headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, skin rashes and muscle pain.
