The Jesusita Fire in the hills around Santa Barbara, California, damaged or completely destroyed almost 100 buildings, forced the evacuation of 30,000 residents, The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this image of the Jesusita fire on May 8, 2009. and released by NASA May 11, 2009. The red outlines indicate hotspots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures consistent with wildfires. Plumes of smoke blow southward over the ocean, and the plume from the western portion of the fire is larger and thicker.
