Residents wait to be evacuated on the beach of the village of Scaletta Zanclea near the Sicilian town of Messina October 02, 2009. At least 17 people were killed and 40 injured in rainstorms in Sicily early on Friday which washed away roads and destroyed homes around Messina, where rescue workers dug through the mud to find survivors. Some people took refuge on roofs and were plucked to safety by helicopter.
