Chilean volunteers take part in a simulated disaster that could have been caused by a fictitious earthquake of 9.0 on the Richter scale and an ensuing tsunami, in Valparaiso on the Pacific coast 100 kms (62 miles) west of Santiago, October 31, 2006. The largest earthquake ever recorded worldwide occurred just 600 km (372 miles) south of here in 1960, with a strength recorded by the USGS of 9.5 on the Richter scale and a tsunami that caused death and destruction in Japan, the Philippines and the U.S.
