| Description: | South Sudan has endured civil war in all but ten years since independence in 1956. One of the most remote and least-developed parts of Africa; what little infrastructure and services were developed in the south were subsequently destroyed by conflict. In January 2005 the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) and the National Congress Party (NCP) ended the recent civil war and created the new Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS).
Save the Children (UK) has been working in south Sudan since 1992 in integrated programmes of food security and livelihoods, basic education, protection, and preventative health. Work in all areas is now being developed to take account of the new situation vis a vis the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the establishment of the new Government of Southern Sudan as the primary duty bearer for children’s rights.
Meanwhile, malnutrition remains one of the major challenges facing children in South Sudan with rates numbering amongst the highest in the world, despite almost two decades of interventions by UN agencies and NGOs. Save the Children’s hunger reduction strategy sets out the need to establish a broad programme in tackling the multiple basic causes of child malnutrition ascertained through a practical application of the UNICEF causal analysis of malnutrition. In order to inform Save the Children’s Hunger Reduction Thematic Programme Planning in southern Sudan and to subsequently develop specific interventions to tackle malnutrition, a causal analysis of malnutrition and a feasibility study for Community Therapeutic Care (CTC) intervention were undertaken in the first half of 2007. With this information at hand, discussions are currently ongoing within the programme and also with the Global Hunger Reduction Team in London, to develop the Hunger Reduction Thematic Programme Plan.
