War Child Canada, a registered Canadian charity based in Toronto that provides humanitarian assistance to children affected by war, is currently looking for a qualified lawyer to fill the position of Project Coordinator-Child Legal Defence Program, Northern Uganda. This individual will be responsible for the implementation, expansion and management of War Child Canada’s Child Legal Defence Project.
War Child Canada implements humanitarian programs in war torn communities around the world providing health, education and psychosocial support to vulnerable children and their families in both emergency and post-conflict settings. War Child Canada works to provide support and training to local organizations, strengthening their capacity and fostering community-led development. Every year, War Child Canada also engages in education and outreach activities involving thousands of young people from across Canada and the United States. Working closely with the music industry, War Child Canada generates awareness, support and action for children’s rights everywhere.
War Child Canada’s Project Coordinator, Northern Uganda will be based in Gulu northern Uganda (with frequent travel to Kitgum, Pader and Lira) and will report to War Child Canada’s Director of International Programs. The Project Coordinator is responsible for the implementation, expansion and management of War Child Canada’s Northern Uganda Child Legal Defence Project. The Project Coordinator will work in close partnership with local legal and other organizations, human rights groups, NGOs and the UN, and war-affected communities to facilitate their provision of legal representation, support and advocacy to children and youth in northern Uganda.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
General
The Project Coordinator, Northern Uganda is responsible for the implementation, expansion and management of War Child Canada’s Child Legal Defence Project. He/she is responsible for the local team, program execution and expansion, logistics, administration, basic finances and management. She/He reports to the Director of International Programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Implement, expand, and coordinate the Northern Uganda Child Legal Defence Project and provide supervision and oversight of the project.
• Work in close cooperation with the staff of the SGBV legal desk, including the Program manager to ensure smooth operation of the projects and coordination where necessary. • Legal capacity building and training of Ugandan lawyers and paralegals, with a focus on children’s rights. • Assisting in the development of useful and effective Public Legal Education tools. • Facilitate training of trainers. • Fulfill reporting requirements on project financials. • Responsible for evaluation and monitoring of the project and completion of necessary documentation. • Responsible for the recruitment and training of local staff. • Developing and expanding radio programming and other community based initiatives to raise awareness about children’s rights. • Training for civil society institutions, government and communities about child rights. • Ensure management and formation of child’s rights clubs. • Extensive collaboration and consultation with legal institutions, local and central authorities, INGOs, national NGOs, the UN, elders and the community. • Travel within Uganda, especially northern Uganda QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS • LL.B or LL.M, and member in good standing with a law society. • Minimum of 3 years experience in project implementation, coordination, and management, preferably with projects related to legal aid initiatives. • Experience in and knowledge of the provision of legal aid and legal aid systems. • Knowledge of International human rights law, with an emphasis on children’s rights. • Interest in and/or knowledge of Ugandan law, with an emphasis on laws affecting children is highly desirable. • Experience in developing and designing effective Public Legal Education tools. • Experience of working and managing in conflict-affected environments. • Experience initiating projects and setting up offices in international (developing country) context. • Management skills and experience, including personnel and financial management. • Proficiency in budget development and management. • Experience in managing donor contacts and relationships, delivering on obligations and a good awareness of donor requirements and priorities. • Detail oriented with strong organizational and leadership skills. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Effective time-management skills with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple time-sensitive priorities. • Fluency in English (both verbal and written). Local language skills an asset. • Computer skills: Excel, Word and Internet applications. • Driver’s license an asset. • Knowledge of the region and an awareness of local culture desirable. • Good conceptual thinking and an ability to develop diverse and innovative solutions to problems. • Well-developed analytical and strategic planning skills. • High level of interpersonal skills; keen awareness of political sensitivities. • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of gender and diversity issues.
