Description:OVERALL DESCRIPTION

General Objectives of the Position

To be part of a team providing support and assistance to GOAL’s water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in a variety of locations. To assist in the process of ensuring that all programmes are well planned, implemented and monitored such that they result in maximum benefit for their target communities. To give direction to field staff so that programmes are completed within set timeframes and budgets and to an acceptable high standard. To be involved in setting strategies and policy for GOAL in relation to water and sanitation programmes to improve future effectiveness and impact.

Key Responsibilities:

To visit programmes as required and directed in order to provide support and guidance to GOAL field staff.
To strengthen programmes by supporting all aspects from initial assessments and planning through to implementation and monitoring and final evaluations.
To conduct and/or organise training sessions for GOAL field staff in topics relating to water, sanitation and hygiene.
To attend training courses as directed and disseminate the information learned among GOAL staff.
To complete reports on all field visits listing clearly advice and recommendations being given and to document relevant case studies for inclusion in GOAL’s learning database.
To respond at short notice to emergency programmes in order to assist with the initial response and planning until staff have been assigned to continue this work.
To network and liaise closely with the WASH advisor and other WASH and engineering staff and staff from other sectors in order to strengthen lesson learning and knowledge sharing within GOAL.
To complete reports on all field visits listing clearly advice and recommendations being given and to document relevant case studies for inclusion in GOAL’s learning database.

Requirements: (educational, language, etc.)

Relevant professional qualification (B.E., B.Sc.) with specific focus on water and sanitation (diploma, masters degree).
Minimum 5 years relevant experience with at least 2 years working in developing countries.
Experience in working with disadvantaged communities and involving them in participatory approaches.
Experience in working on both water supply and sanitation programmes in developing countries and a strong academic and practical knowledge of both disciplines.
Experience in the field of hygiene promotion and an appreciation of its importance.
Familiarity with dealing with donor and government offices in relation to development programmes.
Proficient in preparation of proposals and reports and having good writing, communication and computer skills.
Fluent in written and spoken English.
Willingness to travel extensively and to be out of the Nairobi base for up to 3 months at a time and out of Kenya for the majority of the year overall.
Desirable Skills Include:

Additional languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili,..)
Expertise in geophysics, hydrogeology, drilling programmes.
Experience in recruitment and personnel management.
