Position: Reporting Intern - Iraq Contract duration: 6 months renewable Location: Amman, Jordan Starting Date August 2008 I. Background on ACTED ACTED is an independent international, private, non-partisan and non-profit organization that operates according to principles of strict neutrality, political and religious impartiality, and non discrimination. ACTED was created in 1993 to support populations affected by the conflict in Afghanistan. Based in Paris, France, ACTED now operates in 22 countries worldwide, with over 120 international and 2500 national staff. ACTED has a 40 million budget for over 150 projects spanning 8 sectors of intervention; including emergency relief, food security, health promotion, economic development, education & training, microfinance, local governance & institutional support, and cultural promotion. Country Profile ACTED began work in Iraq in 2003, and relocated to Amman, Jordan due to security threats in 2004 while maintaining operations through a remote control management system. ACTED has two bases in southern Iraq in Kut and Samawa (which also oversees activities in the Thi-Qar governate), and in 2007 opened a base in Erbil to better respond to IDP needs in the Kurdistan region. ACTED originally focused on improving the health, water and sanitation conditions of vulnerable populations in southern Iraq, but the deteriorating security situation and drastic increase in the number of displaced people have resulted in a new focus on meeting IDP and host community needs. Today, the ACTED Iraq team includes more than 120 people, located both in Iraq and Jordan, who implement multi-sector emergency relief projects including WATSAN activities, gender based violence awareness, health promotion, economic rehabilitation, food security, and distribution of basic relief commodities. III. Position Profile The Reporting Intern ensures the production of timely reports for the Reporting Manager as well as the Country Director. He/she assists the Reporting Manager and the Country Director in developing internal and external country communication strategies. Under the supervision of the Reporting Manager, the reporting intern will: Collect and synthesize data from the field, and draft reports in cooperation with project management, finance, monitoring and evaluation, and other field coordination departments Assist the Reporting Manager in developing project proposals, addressing ad hoc donor requests or catalysing action on specific projects or components of projects Liaise with external partners and represent ACTED in coordination and information meetings with NGOs, donors, and other humanitarian actors. IV. Qualifications: Postgraduate diploma in Journalism, International Relations or a relevant field Advanced proficiency in written and spoken English (French in a francophone post/Spanish in a Central American post) Excellent writing and communication skills Ability to work efficiently under pressure V. Conditions: Field Intern benefits include: a 300 USD per month living allowance, coverage of all accommodation, food, and travel costs, a luggage allowance of 50 kg., and the provision of medical, repatriation, and life insurance.
