| Description: | American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization motivated by Judaisms imperative to pursue justice. The AJWS Grants Department supports non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations undertaking grassroots community development and human rights initiatives in select countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. In the context of the communities where we work, grassroots refers to the organized poor, who undertake the planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects and mobilize to seek access to power and resources for their own development. AJWS supports organizations working in the areas of sustainable livelihoods and development, community health, education for all, community engagement in conflict resolution and emergencies, and community-led human rights campaigns. The Program Associate, Asia is a two-year position (Jan 2009-Dec 2010) responsible for providing administrative and substantive support to the management of AJWS' portfolio of grants in South and Southeast Asia. The Program Associate will also collaborate with Asia Program Officers on setting grantmaking policy in the region as part of a closely knit Grants Department and in collaboration with other AJWS programs, including advocacy, volunteer service programs, and communications. Responsibilities Contribute to maintaining overall administrative flow of the grants portfolio (meeting internal deadlines for entry of proposals, correspondence, final reports, and closing grants) Maintain regular communication with current and potential grant recipients including: responding to inquiries on the status of proposals and letters of inquiry; gathering additional and clarifying information Review new and renewal proposals and budgets, communicate with applicants to clarify proposed activities and develop contracts Conduct administrative tasks related to grantmaking, staff travel, grantee travel, etc. Assist with grant docket preparation, including collation of aggregated data, updating grant tracking charts, writing grant recommendations to the Board of Directors and proofreading Collect grantee information for monitoring and evaluation, as well as for tracking themes in AJWS grantmaking Prepare information for communications and development departments, as well as for donors and peer organizations who request it Manage a portfolio of ten to twenty grants in tsunami-affected areas of Indonesia, including monitoring grants through reports and correspondence, arranging for capacity building support, and coordinating grantee meetings and exchanges as needed Collaborate with regional team members and Grants staff on development and articulation of grantmaking priorities Provide support as needed for new and existing projects and programs Qualifications BA/BS required Minimum of one year programmatic work experience at a community-based organization, foundation, international development or human rights organization Proficiency and comfort working with, monitoring, and evaluating budgets At least one year living and working in Asia preferred Working understanding of human rights norms and practices, global development theory and grassroots social movement building Ability to think and work independently Strong interpersonal and communication skills Excellent writing and analytical skills Ability to work as part of a team and remain flexible about the challenges of working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities Organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and strong attention to detail Permanent authorization to work in the U.S. full-time required.
