The objectives of this position are:
To work to improve the perception of MSF and the visibility of MSF’s missions in Sudan and Darfur in particular, primarily through local and national channels
To develop and disseminate specific communication materials focusing on MSF’s work in North Sudan
Specific Tasks:
Regularly update and provide support for developing and updating local, national and regional media mapping
Develop and maintain contacts with local media; develop cooperation and/or networking initiatives
Work with the Heads of Mission, communications departments and the RIO to develop and implement communications strategies, including activities and events for media in North Sudan, which ensure a better understanding of MSF at a local and national level
Monitor the Arabic, as well as English, media in Sudan with an eye to humanitarian stories, issues effecting NGOs, identifying trends and highlighting them; advise on appropriate actions/responses
Keep informed of reports and press releases of key humanitarian and political actors for Sudan
Prepare and disseminate factual media reviews of local and pan-arab media as requested
Qualifications and Professional Experience:
University degree in communications, journalism, public relations or other related field
A minimum of two years professional experience working in the field of journalism or in the communications department of an NGO. International experience desirable
Excellent communication (spoken, written and presentational) skills in English and Arabic
Demonstrable knowledge of the local Sudanese and Arabic media, and ability to cultivate contacts and establish a good network
Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and to cultivate productive relationships with local population and media representatives
Ability to identify communication needs and produce written materials in a clear and concise manner
Demonstrable knowledge of current affairs, especially relating to Sudan
Excellent computer skills, knowledge of relevant software e.g. Photoshop, Adobe Indesign an asset
Excellent organisational, representation and negotiation skills, diplomacy and patience
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
