Job Title: Nutrition Specialist
Job Location: North Sudan, El Geneina with 10% time in Khartoum and 50% time spent in the field locations Start date: as soon as possible Status: Unaccompanied Length: 1 year extendable Application deadline: 15.11.09 Job Purpose: To lead in developing Concerns nutrition programme across our six locations in Darfur in line with international best practice standards and Concern and Sudan policies and in close coordination with all relevant programme managers and staff. This is a wide ranging hands-on role that will require the post-holder to simultaneously work operationally on the ground in developing Concerns nutrition programme and strategically advocating at State and National level in influencing national policy and practice. CTC/CMAM is a significant part of the nutrition programming and provides exciting opportunities for capacity building and learning at all levels in a context that is rapidly changing and one that requires a flexible and dynamic approach. Main duties & Responsibilities: Lead in developing Concerns nutrition programme in West Darfur and in ensuring activities are updated in line with international and national developments. Contribute to the development of Concerns overall health programme that includes health and nutrition working and delivering as a cohesive whole. Ensure that the quality and coverage of the CTC/CMAM programme meets international and national standards and internal and external recommendations. Co-ordinate, streamline and systematise Concerns nutrition programmes in all locations with appropriate protocols and best practice. Work with a national counterpart and actively train/coach him/her on the nutrition specialist role. Identify nutrition training needs of health and nutrition national and expatriate staff and design and set up a training/coaching/mentoring programme. Represent Concern and actively participate at State and National technical fora to advance national policy and practice. Where appropriate play an advocacy role for change based on field experience. Assist the health and nutrition teams and relevant counterparts across the programme in preparing, conducting and analysing nutrition surveys and facilitating coverage and KAP surveys as required. Continually monitor the nutrition situation in the target and neighbouring areas and provide advice to the management and nutrition teams on additional actions that need to be taken to respond to the situation as part of our emergency response Work in coordination with the Health Programme Advisor and others to ensure a cohesive and high standard of overall medical and nutritional care in Concerns programme areas. Compile monthly, quarterly and other reports and proposals for use for programme analysis, monitoring, management and decision-making with team as well as for submission to donors/Dublin. Person specification: Essential MSc Nutrition or Public Health 3 years experience of managing nutrition programmes in protracted displacement contexts. Experience of working at the national and state levels in advancing policy and practice. Experience of developing a programme and initiating and seeing through change and capacity building staff. A good understanding of SPHERE Standards and of how to meet them. A good understanding of international nutrition standards and protocols, CTC/CMAM methodology and the underlying reasons for malnutrition and what organisations like Concern can do to alleviate them. Experience of conducting nutrition surveys and analysing data using nutrition analysis software such as EPI Self motivated, progressive and proactive. Cross cultural awareness and sensitivity. Empathy with Concerns goals and a commitment to capacity building, protection and participation. Good communication and training/capacity building skills. Good organisation and management skills including monitoring and evaluation. Experience of conducting and analysing nutrition surveys Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team. Flexible and adaptable to a changing environment. Ability to work under pressure often to strict deadlines. Knowledge of computer applications i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel. Familiarity with humanitarian law and principles of humanitarian action (international code of conduct and humanitarian charter). Familiarity with Sphere guidelines and people in aid, code of best practice. Knowledge of Humanitarian Accountability Principles Desirable Technical qualification in nutrition Experience of work in Sudan/Horn of Africa region. Experience of livelihoods or sanitation/hygiene programme implementation. Experience of working in a refugee/IDP camp setting. Training/mentoring skills Experience of conducting coverage and KAPB surveys.
